Craig Pinto
Kicker, NJ Revolution
Craig Pinto was always an athlete throughout his childhood, High School and as kicker for the Hofstra University Football team. Throughout these years and into his early twenties he had started to feel ill and depressed. He had now suffered a large weight loss and was in a horrific state of depression. Craig was finally tested for Celiac Disease. Upon testing positive he immediately went on a gluten free diet. Almost instantly Craig was in control of his body and mind again. After much soul searching Craig was trying to remember the last time he was truly happy. These memories skipped back almost a full decade and brought to his final football game. He decided that he once again, at the age of almost 30, would try to play football. After talking to many people and former advisors and coaches he worked his way onto a metro area men’s team. He was happy but this certainly would not appease his hunger for competition nor get him to a status where he could trade football for the opportunity to teach children and young adults about Celiac. He would eventually make contact with the New Jersey Revolution of the American Indoor Football Association. After 6 months of workouts and tryouts Craig had earned a place on the team as the kicker. For some this may have been enough, but not for Craig. Shortly after, the team was so impressed by his ability and work ethic, they named him team captain right before the season’s opening game.

Randi Albertelli
R.O.C.K. Long Island
Here is Randi’s story in her own words; “I have been engulfed in the celiac community for the past 5 years after? my then 5 year-old daughter and I were diagnosed with the disease. Our family’s story continued 3 years later when my then 12 year-old niece was diagnosed. And a year ago, my asymptomatic husband, joined our group, testing positive for celiac. I believe that each one of us needs to advocate for the celiac community, beginning with education. It is vital that we stay up-to-date on the latest developments in celiac research, creating and joining support groups, speaking up in local restaurants, supporting fundraising efforts, and attending lectures. I run monthly support group meetings for parents of children who have celiac disease, R.O.C.K. (raising our celiac kids). I am a committee member for the Celiac Disease Research Center's Gala Fundraiser and also run an Annual Bowling Bash for Celiac Awareness, in which we have raised over $32,000 in the past three years. I have just set-up the First Celiac Awareness Night @ Citifield (May 25, 2010), a portion of the ticket price will go to the Celiac Disease Research Center at Columbia University.
