Dorian Dale
Energy Director, Town of Babylon

In the summer of ’06, when Babylon and Brookhaven became the first towns to adopt Energy Star standards for homes, Dorian Dale was appointed by Supervisor Steven Bellone of Babylon to the newly created position energy director. At the end of 2006, with the help of the local chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, Babylon drafted and codified one of the most comprehensive green building codes in the nation, requiring all new commercial and industrial construction over 4,000s.f. conform with LEED-like standards. The 800,000s.f. Tanger Outlet Mall voluntarily complied and expects LEED-Silver status. The Town will be building 15 LEED-certified affordable houses in the redevelopment of Wyandanch. Along with USGBC-LI, we’ve hosted several LEED-NC workshops in addition to efficiency seminars for all school districts in town. In 2007, Babylon’s IDA announced enhanced benefits to attract green businesses to what will be known as the EcoTech Corridor along Rte 110. Newsday editorialized that “this creative and farsighted initiative… should be studied and emulated by other communities.” In 2008, the Town distributed a CFL to each of its 65,000 residences announcing the Long Island Green Homes (LIGH) program. Since November, LIGH has retrofitted close to 100 existing houses, making them 29% more energy efficient. LIGH has attracted national attention as an exemplar for metro-retrofitting.

Prior to becoming Babylon’s energy director, Dorian Dale was an operations analyst, evaluating security links in the supply chain. He is a member of the Associations of Old Crows and Former Intelligence Officers and serves on the board of the LI chapter of the USGBC, and is its regional rep.
