Joanna D. Underwood,
President, Energy Vision

Joanna D. Underwood is the President of Energy Vision, a national non-profit organization which she founded in 2006 to promote the swiftest possible transformation in this country to a sustainable energy and transportation future.

EV, in its first two years has focused on ending the US addiction to petroleum-based vehicle fuels, and it has become known for its groundbreaking work in educating Americans on the shift that heavy duty diesel truck, bus, shuttle and other fleets can make today, putting them on the path to a sustainable future, with a transition in the near term from diesel to natural gas and to biomethane made from organic wastes, and in the longer term, possibly to renewable hydrogen.

Energy Vision’s outreach and communications agenda, including workshops for municipal officials and refuse and recycling fleet operators, played a key role in bringing heavy duty natural gas vehicle technology to the East Coast in 2007, encouraging the shift (made or planned) by more than 250 refuse and recycling trucks from diesel fuel to natural gas – a domestically plentiful and much cleaner fuel.

Ms. Underwood established Energy Vision after stepping aside as President of the national New York-based environmental research organization INFORM, which she lead for 31 years. Its prolific award-winning research, published more than 100 studies, assessed the impacts of business practices, technologies and products on the environment and human health. It pioneered in exploring solutions aimed at preventing waste and pollution at their source, and for this work it received the highest award for national leadership from the US Environmental Protection Agency. As part of INFORM’s agenda, its research explored alternative transportation fuels and technologies. Its nine major transportation studies have been widely used resources for government, business and environmental organizations.

A graduate of Bryn Mawr College, Ms. Underwood, in l999, also received an honorary doctor of science degree from Wheaton College. She has written dozens of articles and spoken on energy and environmental issues in business, government and civic forums worldwide. She has participated in many business and government leadership groups, served on advisory boards for the US Department of Energy, participated during the Clinton Administration in the President’s Council on Sustainable Development, served as a board member of The Keystone Center and of the Rocky Mountain Institute (in Colorado) and was a member of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority from 1979 to 1999.

Joanna Underwood currently serves on the Boards of the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation in New York City and the Clean Vehicle Education Foundation in Washington DC. In 2000 and 2002, she was chosen by The Earth Times as one of the world's 100 most influential voices in the global environmental movement. In 2006, she received an Award as one of the country’s Energy Pioneers from the Center for Sustainable Energy at Bronx Community College in New York City.

Jen Chapin
Singer-Songwriter

Jen Chapin’s music is jazz-tinged urban folk — story songs that search forcommunity and shared meaning, powered by the funk, soul and improvisation of the city. Critics have hailed her work on albums Linger (2004) and Ready (2006) as “thoughtful.. worth-savoring” (People), “smart, observant, lyrically deft, politically aware and emotionally intuitive” (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel), “addictive” (Boston Globe), “supremely confident, slightly off-center, and instantly compelling.” (River City Reader) and “brilliant.. soulfully poetic” (NPR). JazzTimes has called her “a first-rate storyteller” while Relix regards her as “one of the freshest voices singing today." She has been featured on “Late Nite with Conan O’Brien,” honored by the USA Songwriting Competition, appeared on stage with Bruce Springsteen, and opened up for Bruce Hornsby and the Neville Brothers.

“..Demonstrating how she can stretch perimeters well beyond expectation” (Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange) in her newest release the CD/DVD Light Of Mine, the musician-activist applies her formidable artistic insight to the repertoire of iconic songwriters such as David Bowie, Springsteen and Stevie Wonder to explore notions of power and fear, resignation and protest. Two original compositions, Insatiable and Lullabye, underscore the message of the project, an affirmation of a growing movement away from the politics of fear towards the politics of possibility.

Jen’s music reflects a diversity of experience. She is a mother to 3 1/2 year-old Maceo Crump, who most often accompanies his parents on tour. She is an activist, with a life-long involvement in WHY (World Hunger Year), an organization that supports innovative, community-based solutions to hunger and poverty. Jen was Board Chair of WHY for 6 years and now serves as Board Secretary and chair of WHY’s Policy and Programs Committee, as well as on the Advisory Board of WHY’s Program “KIDS Can Make a Difference.” She is an educator, leading workshops and presentations to college, community and church groups, with a background teaching full-time in Brooklyn classrooms. And she is a student, with a BA in International Relations from Brown University, additional studies at Berklee College of Music, extensive travels in Zimbabwe and Mexico, and an ongoing passion to learn more about the world, and its emerging pathways to greater social justice.

Dorian Dale
Energy Director, Town of Babylon

In the summer of ’06, when Babylon and Brookhaven became the first towns to adopt Energy Star standards for homes, Dorian Dale was appointed by Supervisor Steven Bellone of Babylon to the newly created position energy director. At the end of 2006, with the help of the local chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, Babylon drafted and codified one of the most comprehensive green building codes in the nation, requiring all new commercial and industrial construction over 4,000s.f. conform with LEED-like standards. The 800,000s.f. Tanger Outlet Mall voluntarily complied and expects LEED-Silver status. The Town will be building 15 LEED-certified affordable houses in the redevelopment of Wyandanch. Along with USGBC-LI, we’ve hosted several LEED-NC workshops in addition to efficiency seminars for all school districts in town. In 2007, Babylon’s IDA announced enhanced benefits to attract green businesses to what will be known as the EcoTech Corridor along Rte 110. Newsday editorialized that “this creative and farsighted initiative… should be studied and emulated by other communities.” In 2008, the Town distributed a CFL to each of its 65,000 residences announcing the Long Island Green Homes (LIGH) program. Since November, LIGH has retrofitted close to 100 existing houses, making them 29% more energy efficient. LIGH has attracted national attention as an exemplar for metro-retrofitting.
